Police identify pedestrian killed in Gaithersburg crash on Thursday (bethesdamagazine.com) — A pedestrian from Germantown has died after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Route 355 near Christopher Avenue in Gaithersburg early Thursday morning, close to Costco and Sheehy Ford Lincoln. Montgomery County Police say the driver stayed at the scene and are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to contact their Collision Reconstruction Unit.
2. Five Penn students named 2026–2028 Obama-Chesky Voyager Scholars (upenn.edu) — Gaithersburg resident Emily Bhatnagar has been named a 2026–2028 Obama-Chesky Voyager Scholar, bringing national recognition to her work supporting critically ill children and their caregivers. Now studying leadership and communications at Penn, she founded the nonprofit For Love & Buttercup, which has already delivered more than 30,000 books to children with cancer nationwide, and will gain funding, travel, and mentoring to expand her impact.
3. What a Healthcare Compliance Attorney Heard at the OCR's HIPAA Security Conference (hipaajournal.com) — Gaithersburg's NIST campus recently hosted a major HIPAA security conference where federal regulators and healthcare compliance leaders dug into looming rule changes and long-standing gaps in risk analysis. For local residents working in healthcare or IT, the takeaways were clear: tougher requirements around multifactor authentication, asset inventories, and regular risk assessments are coming, and many organizations still haven't met standards that have been on the books for 20 years.
4. Pipeline: UHS Opens New 120-Bed Facility; Blackbird Expands into Maryland (bhbusiness.com) — Families in Gaithersburg now have a new option for pediatric behavioral health care, as Blackbird Health has opened a local clinic offering evaluations for ADHD and autism, therapy, and psychiatry. The expansion, part of Blackbird's entrance into Maryland, focuses on comprehensive, hybrid in-person and virtual services for children with anxiety, attention issues, sleep problems, and learning challenges.
