GAITHERSBURG, MD — A 27-year-old Gaithersburg man was sentenced to 14 years in prison for selling fentanyl to a teenager who later died.
A release from the office of the U.S. attorney for the District of Maryland states Kelvin Reyes will serve an additional five years of supervised release.
The Sept. 18 sentencing comes after Reyes pleaded guilty in May to one count of distribution of a controlled substance resulting in death. Reyes had been facing up to 17 years in prison.

The case dates back to the evening of January 13, when Reyes was contacted through Instagram by a 15-year-old girl wanting to purchase fentanyl. The pair met up later that night at an elementary school near the girl's home.
The meeting was confirmed through phone data, as well as Ring camera footage that showed the teen briefly leaving her home and social media posts from Reyes indicating he was selling in the area.
Officials said in the release that the teenager was later found dead in her bedroom by her mother. The girl was found in the fetal position next to a piece of aluminum foil with fentanyl residue.
An autopsy later confirmed the cause of death as fentanyl and despropionyl fentanyl intoxication.
A search of Reyes' home returned a variety of items, including a digital scale, plastic bags, aluminum foil, and straws with residue.
