Market Forces & Cultural Identity: The Art of Dr. Gan Yu

CCACC Art Gallery will host the opening reception for the exhibition “Market Forces & Cultural Identity: The Art of Dr. Gan Yu” on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 2:00 PM. This exhibition is also presented in celebration of the 2026 Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. We warmly invite art enthusiasts to join us for this special occasion.

Based in New York, artist Gan Yu is a multifaceted figure whose practice spans roles as an artist, curator, and scholar. He earned his M.A. in Studio Art from Minnesota State University, a Ph.D. in Chinese Painting from the China Academy of Art, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of History of Art & Architecture at Harvard University.

He is currently a Professor and international doctoral supervisor at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, and also teaches contemporary Chinese ink art courses and workshops at The Art Students League of New York. In addition, Gan Yu serves on the board of the Cohen Art Foundation in New York.

This exhibition features 17 selected works spanning a wide range of media, including pen, colored pencil, marker, ink, acrylic, and mixed media, extending further into torn paper, canvas, and sculptural installations. Through unconventional mark-making and material experimentation, the artist redefines the boundaries of pictorial language. Among the works is a striking sculptural piece based on Wall Street data, transforming abstract financial information into tangible form, visually compelling and conceptually profound.
