MoCo Refugees to Benefit From Community Volleyball Tournament on August 22

On August 22, 2026, the New Neighbor Interfaith Alliance (NNIA) will host the third annual Set Them Up for Success Volleyball Tournament and Family Fun Day, bringing together volleyball teams, faith community members, and the public at large to raise funds to launch recent refugees in Montgomery County on the road to self-sufficiency.
As an interfaith non-profit alliance of 37 churches, synagogues, mosques and other faith and civic groups, NNIA aspires to continue raising funds to help resettled refugees with rental assistance, deferred medical care, English language skills and job placement. They also hope to expand their volunteer numbers to help more beneficiaries with job assistance, reliable transportation, and mentoring in life skills.
“These new neighbors, many of whom helped U.S. military forces and contractors during the war in Afghanistan, are our most recent large wave of immigrants coming to our shores, and they need help resettling and starting their lives,” said Christine King, president of the NNIA board.“We hope this tournament helps provide welcome and much needed funds to help these refugees after living through oppression, war and mortal danger in their home country, while helping acclimate our new neighbors to life in the United States through the universal language of sport.”
The eight-team field is full, but some teams still need individual players. If you’d like to join a team as a freelance player, please contact tournament coordinator Melissa Egan above. A raffle, with up to 25 themed baskets, will feature gifts for tech lovers, pickleball players, and kids, tweens and teens; tickets can be purchased online at https://ssl.charityweb.net/nnia-maryland/event/cpstutickets.htm or at the event. And please bring your family members of all ages; admission is free and activities include lawn games, face painting, rock painting, sand art, and much more. A food truck provided by Beltway Bistro will also be onsite.
