City Council Narrows Selection For Vacant Council Seat

From Gaithersburg City Council: The Gaithersburg City Council has narrowed the selection of candidates for the Council seat left vacant by the passing of Henry Marraffa. Twelve individuals submitted applications for the position; five finalists have been selected. They are Jose Contreras, James McNulty, Yvette Monroe, James Rolfes and Laurie-Anne Sayles.

These five candidates will be invited to each deliver a three-minute statement at the Mayor and City Council Work Session on Monday, January 23, 2017, at 7:30 p.m. and participate in evening interviews with City Council Members on January 25 and 26. Selection of the new Council Member will take place in Executive Session on Monday, February 6, with the swearing in taking place at a Special Session on Wednesday, February 8, to be immediately followed by a reception in the City Hall Gallery. The selected Council Member will serve until the next municipal election on November 7, 2017.

Section 35 of the City Code allows for the City Council to select individuals to fill vacancies, but also provides for public petition for a special election for this appointed position. The petition must contain the signatures of at least twenty percent of the registered voters in Gaithersburg and be received within 30 days of an appointment.
