City Official Shift Results in Open Seat on City Council

The Gaithersburg City Council anticipates a vacancy in its membership this October.

Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney A. Katz’s upcoming resignation will leave an opening on the City Council, and his replacement will be chosen from its current members.

On Oct. 7 the current council members will announce a new mayor, who will be sworn in on Nov. 10. He or she will serve a partial term lasting until November 2015, when a new official will be elected for the remaining two years of of Katz’s four-year term.

Gaithersburg residents can apply for City Council membership through 5 p.m. on Oct. 6.

Application requirements include:

  • Meeting the council qualifications as provided in Section 4 of the City Charter
  • Submitting a Financial Disclosure Statement
  • Adhering to anticipated expanded ethics requirements
  • Submitting a letter of interest, a resume, and statement of their priorities and vision for the city

Applicants that advance to the second round of consideration must offer a short statement to the mayor and City Council Work Session held on Oct. 27. They must also interview with current City Council members. A new council member will be selected by Nov. 3.
