Gaithersburg Embraces Affordable Healthcare

OFA Montgomery County volunteers turned out in droves yesterday to pass-out information to Gaithersburg residents about Affordable Healthcare.

"All [the flyers were] gobbled up and I felt almost popular!" said volunteer Anne Burrows.  In fact, the flyers were such a hit that volunteers had to have more printed on-the-fly!

More than 90 OFA (Organizing for Action) volunteers signed-up to distribute information about the Affordable Care Act (ACA, affectionately known as Obamacare) in Gaithersburg this past Sunday.

The Affordable Healthcare Act goes into effect October 1, 2013; and Maryland's healthcare exchange (the vehicle for providing comparative provider information and rates) is regarded as one of the best in the nation!

"I find that this canvassing effort creates an enthusiastic 'Let's get our Town Healthy' attitude - reaching out to our neighbors because everyone deserves to be healthy," says Katherine Deerkoski, an organizer of the event.

The volunteers were stationed at 28 different locations in Gaithersburg retail hubs.

"At several of the Dollar Stores where I solicited, the managers did not have health coverage and wanted the information," said Deerkoski.

Other volunteers concurred reporting that many residents, and those who worked in the area, were very excited to receive the flyer, and often took several to give to their friends, family and co-workers.
