Gaithersburg One of Fastest Growing Cities in Nation

Urbana, Maryland, which is home to the Villages of Urbana community, is situated in the heart of the Bethesda-Gaithersburg-Frederick region.

Gaithersburg has recently been named one of America’s Best-Performing Cities in the past by Forbes as the region has continued to grow and thrive overall.

And now recently, the Capital Gazette reported that Gaithersburg is among the fastest growing cities in the entire United States, as measured by the U.S. Census Bureau.   Just last year, Gaithersburg’s population grew by 4.4%, making it the 8th fastest growing city in the country.  Even more impressive, this city is one of only two this side of Mississippi to rank on the list.

Fred Katz, businessman and professor at the Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School, notes that in order to grow a city, jobs and accessibility must bring in new residents.  Many biotech companies have opened their headquarters in Gaithersburg, bringing excellent jobs to the area.  Additionally, “you can live [in Gaithersburg] and go into the District of Columbia in a reasonable amount of time” Katz says.  “If you can live in Gaithersburg and drive to work in 10 minutes, it’s even nicer.”

Urbana reaps many of the same benefits from the growing popularity of Gaithersburg.  When a city’s population grows, it often means every facet of the city is growing as well.  This provides more employment opportunities, more schools, better businesses, beautiful new homes, and ultimately, an ever improving and flourishing area.

Sidney Katz (no relation to Fred Katz), the mayor of Gaithersburg, pointed to successful neo-traditional and mixed-use communities, like Villages of Urbana, as another possibility for bringing more residents to the area.  When there are recreational options, schools, and all types of shopping venues alongside beautiful new townhomes, moving to a community like Villages of Urbana is a no-brainer.  Factor in the incredible job opportunities that are just minutes away, residents here can also enjoy shorter daily commutes.
