GAITHERSBURG, MD — K9 Max, the Gaithersburg Police Department's first cross-trained dog, has passed away, officials announced on Thursday. He was 12-and-a-half years old.

"Our Canine Unit is mourning the passing of a retired member of the team," the department said in a Facebook post.

The canine joined the force at one year old and faithfully served the Gaithersburg community for eight-and-a-half years until his retirement in 2015. Officer Eastman was his partner.

"K9 Max was the department's first cross-trained dog, and made a major impact in Gaithersburg and the surrounding area," the department said.

Losing a four-legged best friend and partner is tough. But I think it's safe to say that Max is running around and enjoying an unlimited supply of dog bones and squeaky toys in Doggie Heaven.
