Gaithersburg Middle School hosted a fun, entertaining evening last Friday with their annual Teacher vs. Parent basketball game. The evening began with the passing out of art awards. GMS students had entered their artwork in the Martin Luther King Jr. Poster Contest and to the Character Counts Poster Contest, and they were fortunate enough to have many of their students receive certificates and win prizes. Soon after the awards were given out, the members of each basketball team were introduced and the game commenced. Four points were quickly put on the board in less than a minute, producing a tie of 2-2. As evenly matched as the game seemed, the teachers rapidly made more and more points and by half time the score was 26-14, with the teachers at a high advantage.
During the half time, the spectators were able to get the pizza and drinks that the PTA were selling, and they also had a game for all the children to participate in. The children were split up into two groups and each group was given a certain amount of time to shoot as many shots as they could before the time was up. Once the twenty minute break was up, the game began again. The teams came back with renewed vigor and the parents made the first basket as they got back on the court. Unfortunately by the end of the game they were still on the losing side with the score 66-38. Right at the last second the teachers made one more shot, raising the score to 68-38. The parents accepted their defeat good-heartedly, and the teachers rejoiced in their victory. All in all, it was a successful night and teachers, parents, and students were all able to have a good evening of fun together.
