Man Guilty In Election Day Crash That Killed Gaithersburg Couple

Davinder Singh was convicted of multiple counts stemming from the Nov. 8, 2022, crash outside a school polling place.

GAITHERSBURG, MD — A judge this week convicted a Gaithersburg man in a crash that killed a married couple who were on their way to vote, according to multiple reports.

Davinder Singh, 47, was found guilty on several counts following a bench trial Monday, according to a Montgomery Community Media report citing the county state's attorney's office. Singh was convicted of homicide by a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, driving while under the influence of alcohol and other charges, reports said.

Singh faces up to 10 years in prison and $14,000 in fines, WTOP reported.

Singh was charged following the Nov. 8, 2022, crash that killed 65-year-old Miguel Antonio Ortiz and 70-year-old Ana Margarita Ortiz, a couple from Gaithersburg who were crossing the street to vote at a school polling place.

According to Montgomery County police, Singh was driving his Toyota Prius west on School Drive when he struck the couple. Police later found he was driving under the influence of alcohol.

Singh's sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 20.
