Newlywed's $20K Lottery Win Will Offset Business' Slow Season

A Brookeville woman and newlywed who runs a landscaping business with her husband says a $20K lottery win comes at the perfect time.

BROOKEVILLE, MD — A Brookeville newlywed picked a good time to buy her first Maryland Lottery ticket in four years. While quick to admit that her husband is the primary Maryland Lottery player in the family, this woman found the $2 Ravens scratch-off that turned out to be a $20,000 winner.

The Montgomery County resident, who works with her husband in a landscaping business, purchased the instant ticket on Feb. 1 at the 7-Eleven store located at 29 Olney-Sandy Spring Road in Ashton. She took it out to her car and began scratching it off.

“It’s right near the dry cleaner I was going to, and it’s his favorite store for Lottery tickets,” she said in a lottery news release. “He plays all the time. I don’t play very much, so I didn’t know if I had won. I wasn’t sure.”

When she took the scratch-off home and handed it to her husband to examine, he was shocked.

“He said, ‘Where did you get this?’ ” she recalled. “He was very surprised that I had bought a ticket. The last time I did was four years ago.”

Her husband confirmed that the ticket was a $20,000 top-prize winner. She said that she expects him to ask her to purchase more scratch-offs in the future because his largest lottery win delivered a $400 prize.

The winner said the prize will come in handy because the landscaping business is slow this time of year. The 7-Eleven store will receive a $200 bonus from the Lottery – equal to 1 percent of the prize value.
