White's Ferry Reopens After Car Plunges Into Water (Update)

A Gaithersburg driver has been charged with DUI after he reportedly drove onto a ferry and into the Potomac River early Friday.

UPDATED at 11 a.m. POOLESVILLE, MD — The White’s Ferry boat on the Potomac River between Poolesville, MD, and Leesburg, VA, reopened shortly before 8 a.m. Friday after a car plunged off the ramp and its driver was rescued.

The mishap occurred about 1:30 a.m. when a man drove his car through the gate, onto the ferry, and into the river, according to Montgomery County Police.

The 26-year-old Gaithersburg driver, who has not been identified, was rescued and charged with driving under the influence.

While workers extracted the car from the water, the ferry was shut down for nearly three hours. Service reopened around 7:45 a.m. Friday.
