Barnesville School of Arts & Sciences fourth grade students won an Arbor Day video contest that was featured on Montgomery Community Media. The prize was an Arbor Day festival on campus. Expert staff from Montgomery Parks led a series of demonstrations for first through eighth grade about tree biology, why trees are necessary, and how we care for them.
Arborists showed students how they climb and trim trees. Horticulture & Community Gardens staff talked to students about river birch trees and showed how the emerald ash borer harms ash trees in Montgomery County. Staff from Pope Farms showed students how to identify native trees like the Eastern redbud.
In addition to the amazing morning of activities, Barnesville received a redbud tree that will be planted at the entrance to Explorer Woods -- an area where third graders go every Wednesday for student-driven collaboration and exploration activities.
