📰 News we're reading

1. Stabbing and Series of Vehicle-Related Thefts Included in August 26 Crime Summary (mocoshow.com) — Police reported broken vehicle windows on Turtle Rock Terrace and a stabbing on Crystal Rock Drive in the 5th District, which includes Germantown and Clarksburg. The victim in the stabbing was hospitalized with injuries not considered life-threatening, and several other thefts from vehicles were logged across Montgomery County that same day.

2. Car thefts spike in Montgomery County, bucking state and national trends (thebanner.com) — Montgomery County is seeing a more than 20% jump in car thefts even as statewide and national numbers fall, and one recent stolen vehicle case allegedly began in Germantown before a fatal crash in Gaithersburg. Police say juveniles and tech-enabled theft methods are driving the problem and offer practical tips residents can use to better secure their cars.

3. Maryland crops limited for apple picking season due to spring cold snap (fox5dc.com) — Butler's Orchard in Germantown will still offer pick-your-own apples over Labor Day weekend, but the season will be shorter and supplies limited after a devastating spring freeze. Statewide, many orchards lost most of their apple and peach crops, prompting federal disaster aid and state-level relief efforts to help Maryland farmers recover.

4. Federal contractor Amentum to lay off over 380 workers in Hanover (thebanner.com) — Amentum, a major federal contractor, plans to lay off more than 380 workers in Hanover later this year after changes to intelligence contracts. The company also maintains offices in Germantown, Aberdeen Proving Ground, and Annapolis Junction, so local residents connected to its regional operations may feel ripple effects from the restructuring.
