Annual Winter Concert Features Choral Classics

The 60+ member Gaithersburg Community Chorus presents its 23rd Annual Winter Concert on Saturday, December 11, 2010 at 7 p.m. The Chorus is directed by Hugh Harvey, III and accompanied by Mary Lu Hartsell.

The program begins with Holocaust Cantata, a piece that originally premiered at the Kennedy Center in March, 1998.  The lyrics are translations from the original Polish by an anonymous author, set to melodies arranged by Donald McCullough. The work is scored for piano and cello accompaniment.  Alan Saucedo, a distinguished cellist, will provide the cello accompaniment.  Following the cantata, the chorus will be performing Even When God is Silent by Michael Horvit, which was commissioned to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Kristallnacht.  The second half of the program includes a setting of Ave Maria by Franz Biebl, a setting of O Magnum Mysterium by Jacob Gallus (Handl), a setting of the Hodie from Benjamin Britten's Ceremony of Carols, followed by lighter holiday classics.

The performance will take place at the Gaithersburg High School Auditorium, 314 South Frederick Avenue in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Admission is free, but donations are gratefully accepted. This program is presented by the City of Gaithersburg Cultural Arts Advisory Committee and supported by a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council, an agency dedicated to cultivating a vibrant cultural community where the arts thrive.  Funding for the Maryland State Arts Council is also provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency which believes that a great nation deserves great art.
