Walkway Will Honor Slain Germantown Boy, Mom

Great Seneca Creek Elementary School is finalizing a memorial walkway in honor of a slain alumnus, William McQuain, and his mother, the late Jane McQuain. 

“They epitomized what our school community is about,” said Principal Greg Edmundson.

In waves, students have been coming to the school’s courtyard by the class full to place nearly 1,400 bricks in the earth, forming what will be known as the William and Jane McQuain Walkway. 

The walkway is expected to be finished by Friday.

William McQuain, 11, attended Great Seneca from grades three to five. The boy and his mother were found dead in October. Jane McQuain’s estranged husband, .

The school community has been mourning the loss openly.

Last week, for a memorial landscape project. William was a sixth-grader at the school.

The thought of honoring the McQuains at Great Seneca had been in the works since November. All of the labor has come from students, teachers and volunteers, an effort coordinated by Great Seneca dad Mark Brady, Edmundson said.

Great Seneca PTA President Sandy Holloway said the school's current crop of fifth graders have the strongest memories of William. A private reception and presentation was planned for the fifth-grade students and parents Friday evening. 

"We want to give them the first look at it [the walkway], so that they know that some way, he and his mother will always be remembered," Holloway said.

Holloway said a larger, public ceremony was planned for the fall.
