Surviving Germantown Glory

Organizers of the Germantown Glory Fourth of July celebration anticipate 20,000 people in attendance for the food, fun and fireworks. Here are some tips to help you thoroughly enjoy the event.

If you're looking for a great firework display this Fourth of July and don't want to deal with the crowds in D.C., Montgomery County is hosting the Germantown Glory fireworks display at the South Germantown Recreational Park

Beginning at 6 p.m., Germantown Glory will offer a family-friendly evening of fun, food and fireworks. Children's activities will be available, along with food vendors offering burgers, hot dogs and ice cream. The South Germantown Driving Range will be open until 10 p.m. — another option for attendees waiting for the fireworks.

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra will be performing a "musical salute to America" starting at 8 p.m. and are expected to finish up around 9 p.m., when the fireworks are scheduled to start. If you're trying to see the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's performance, know that the stage will be toward the left of the park, upon entry past the mini-golf course and swim center.

So long as you can make it to the South Germantown Recreational Park, you can expect an excellent view of the fireworks. Bring low lawn chairs and blankets, bug spray and sunscreen and pack a picnic, though alcohol will not be permitted.

As for parking, it is free and plentiful, but with an expected 20,000 people in attendance, plan on arriving early to claim your spot.

Be sure to park close to the park exit to avoid getting stuck in exiting traffic after the fireworks.  Not sure how to get there?  Look for the signs along Germantown Road (Route 118), they'll direct you towards the park, which is off of Schaeffer Road.
