It's that time again! April 15 looms over us annually as the dreaded deadline for filing our income tax return. Form 1040 is how we tell the federal government how much we earned, how much we've already paid in income tax through estimated payments and how much we still owe. (As if they don't already know!) The state of Maryland requires we file form 540.
Good news. April 15th this year falls on April 18th. That is, the deadline for filing your taxes falls on the 18th which is the first federal workday after Saturday April 15. (Monday is a federal work holiday.) You can hang on to your money for an extra three days!
If you aren't going to be ready to file, an automatic extension is allowed with no reason required. Most tax professionals will file your extension at no additional cost to you. Remember, however, the only thing being extended is your deadline for filing the paperwork. A reasonable estimate of any money you owe must be deposited by the 18th. A tax professional can assist you in determining the proper amount.
