MD Teen Charged In VSU Mass Shooting That Left 5 Injured: Report

A motive for the Virginia State University shooting over the weekend has not been detailed by investigators.

GLEN BURNIE, MD — A new arrest was made in connection with the mass shooting that took place over the weekend at Virginia State University, according to reports.

The Associated Press and NBC Washington reported that 19-year-old Ja'niah Johnson of Glen Burnie was charged in the case.

According to reports, the suspect in the shooting — Camron Harris of Henrico County, Virginia —was found hiding in Johnson's dorm closet. Authorities have not detailed whether Johnson and Harris knew one another before the weekend shooting. A motive has also not been detailed.

Online court records show Johnson was taken into custody Tuesday and charged with accessory after the fact in a felony. The offense is listed as a Class 1 misdemeanor charge.

Johnson has since been released on her own recognizance and is booked for an arraignment on Aug. 25.

The VSU shooting took place Saturday just after 1:30 a.m., prompting a campus lockdown and leaving five people, including a student, hospitalized with gunshot wounds.

All five individuals were between 17 and 23 years old and were found near the university's Quad Annexes. At the time, the school said a 21-year-old man was in critical condition following the shooting.

University officials said in a Saturday update that the shooting involved "multiple suspects," although they did not provide descriptions.
