GLEN BURNIE, MD — A Glen Burnie man will spend decades in prison after officials accused him of carjacking a victim and intentionally hitting him with the stolen vehicle, authorities said recently. Prosecutors identified the convicted man as Gerald Haigis, 47.

A judge sentenced Haigis to life in prison with all but 50 years suspended, a press release announced last Friday. This means Haigis will spend half a century behind bars for his conviction of attempted first-degree murder, armed carjacking, armed robbery and first-degree assault.

“Having to relive such a horrific incident is never an easy thing to do and it’s because of the victims’ strength that the defendant was held accountable and will spend decades in prison where he won’t be able to hurt anyone else," Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Anne Colt Leitess said in the release. "I hope this sentence provides him with a sense of solace as he continues to heal from such a vicious assault and robbery."

The encounter happened on April 5, 2021 in Glen Burnie. The victim told the Anne Arundel County Police Department that he drove Haigis and an unidentified woman to Baltimore City to buy drugs, officials said. They returned to Glen Burnie and parked in a lot near Baymeadow Drive and E. Ordnance Road.

Authorities said the victim reported that Haigis, who was sitting behind him, put something around his neck and tried to strangle him. The victim fought off Haigis and tried to back the car out of the lot. The woman in the front passenger seat, however, slammed the vehicle into park and turned it off.

The victim got out of the car and tried to run away. Haigis move into the driver's seat and hit the victim with the car, prosecutors said. The victim then got out of the roadway and hid beneath a truck in the parking lot.

Nearby business security cameras backed up the victim's claims, the release said.

Officials said the footage also showed Haigis:

  • Trying to hit the victim with the car several times
  • Getting out of the victim’s car
  • Pointing a gun at his head
  • Going through his pockets
  • Taking the contents
  • Getting back into the stolen car
  • Fleeing the scene

Officers spotted the victim sitting on a median strip with bloody hair and an injured arm, authorities said.

The release said a jury found Haigis guilty on Oct. 7, 2021.

Assistant State’s Attorney Carolynn Grammas prosecuted this case, and Judge Pamela Alban presided over it.
