Boys' Lacrosse: Northeast Dominates Glen Burnie, 12-3

The visiting Eagles scored early and often in an easy win Friday night.

Sophomore Jake Hesse and senior Brendan Lee both scored three times for as the Eagles rolled over homestanding 12-3 Friday night at a frigid and wet Pop Whayland Stadium.

After the Eagles' Brian Fletcher opened the scoring with 4:44 remaining in the first quarter, Gophers' goalie Chris Ford was victimized when he was forced to come out of the crease to retrieve an errant pass, only to see the ball trickle into the net after it was knocked away from him with 1:40 left in the opening frame.

The backbreaker, however, came from Northeast's Hesse, who scored with just 5 seconds remaining in the quarter to put the Eagles ahead 3-0.

The second quarter belonged to Lee, who racked up all three of his goals in one five-minute stretch as Northeast took a 6-0 lead into the half. Glen Burnie head coach Aaron Courtney was left to rally his players during the break.

"I told them that they were still in the game, and that there was a whole new half coming up," Courtney said.

Unfortunately for Glen Burnie, the third quarter had a very familiar feel to it, as goals by Hesse and Fletcher helped the Eagles' lead grow to 10-0 with over six minutes remaining in the period.

The Gophers, down 11-0, finally broke through on a Josh Mercurio goal with 10 minutes left in the game. Mercurio and Ezekiel Turner would each add goals before the game ended.

For Glen Burnie, the regrouping will begin straightaway.

"Tonight, the guys just waited a little late to start playing," Courtney said. "We'll start cleaning things up at practice tomorrow [Saturday]."

Ford finished with 10 saves while Northeast goalie Mike Reigle had four. The Gophers edged the Eagles 47-45 on groundballs.
