Construction Worker’s $2M Win Builds Bank Account

A Glen Burnie man claims the $2M prize on a Maryland Lottery game; he plans to buy a house his entire family can live in.

GLEN BURNIE, MD — Sharing Maryland Lottery scratch-off wins with their close-knit family is part of the plan for an Anne Arundel County man and his brothers. They play just about every day, focusing on one game and attempting to find one of its big-money prizes. The plan paid off recently with a $2 million prize.

The brothers had targeted the Lottery’s $2,000,000 Fortune instant ticket, which is a $30 game with big prizes of $2 million, $50,000 and $5,000. The probability of winning any prize is 1 in 2.82. The 32-year-old construction worker told Maryland Lottery officials they never really spoke about winning the $2 million top prize because it was just too crazy of an idea.

“Every day I went to the 7-Eleven near the work site to get a few of the tickets,” said the husband and father in a news release. “My brothers did the same thing. Two of my brothers live with my family. We’d talk each night about what we’d won.” His other brothers also shared their successes.

Last Friday, his trip to a 7-Eleven store in Glen Burnie led to a rendezvous with Lottery luck. The Glen Burnie resident had played the game so often in recent weeks that he knew the meaning of the instant win gold bar symbol and dollar amount underneath. Still, he wouldn’t let himself believe what he was seeing. The native of Guatemala consulted one of his brothers and posed a hypothetical question about the symbol’s meaning. When he got the response he’d hoped for, the winner shared his big news.

“This money will allow us to get a bigger house where my whole family can live,” he said. “We all want to be together.”
