Driver, 90, Pronounced Dead After Crash In Linthicum: Police

A 90-year-old driver was pronounced dead after a crash in Linthicum, police said. The other motorist was not hurt.

LINTHICUM, MD — A driver was pronounced dead after a Monday crash in Linthicum, police announced Tuesday.

Officers identified the victim as 90-year-old Earl Cleaveland Phillips of Baltimore. The other driver was not hurt.

The wreck happened around 12:58 p.m. at the exit off eastbound Interstate 695 onto N. Hammonds Ferry Road, authorities said. The victim was taking the exit in his 2013 Hyundai Elantra. Witnesses told police that the driver was approaching an intersection with a steady red traffic signal.

Officers said the sedan jumped the concrete median, went through the red light and entered the intersection with N. Hammonds Ferry Road.

At the same time, a 2004 Mercedes ML350 was heading north on N. Hammonds Ferry Road and approaching the junction. The Mercedes then hit the Hyundai as it drove through the intersection, authorities said.

The Anne Arundel County Fire Department pronounced Phillips dead on the scene, a press release said.

Detectives did not speculate what caused the crash or who was at fault. The Anne Arundel County Police Department is still investigating.
