Driver Thrown From SUV In Crash, Baby Safe In Car Seat: Police
An Arnold man was thrown from his SUV in a crash on a Glen Burnie road, but a 1-year-old was safely strapped into a car seat, police say.
GLEN BURNIE, MD — An Arnold man was thrown from his SUV in a crash on a Glen Burnie road, but a 1-year-old was safely strapped into a car seat, police say. The driver — Robert Barbato Jr., 35, of the 200 block of Greenleaf Circle in Arnold — suffered life-threatening injuries in the accident, according to Anne Arundel County Police.
The single-vehicle crash happened about 6 p.m. on April 20 on Maryland Route 10 near Marley Station Road in Glen Burnie. Barbato's 1994 GMC was northbound on Maryland Route 10 approaching the Marley Station Road overpass when he lost control. Police say Barato over-corrected and the SUV swerved across all three lanes and struck a guardrail on the right side of the highway, where he was thrown from the SUV.
A one-year-old child remained belted in a child-safety seat as the GMC continued back across all three lanes. The vehicle struck a guardrail on the left side of the highway and continued down the road about 500 yards before coming to rest against the guardrail on the left shoulder.

Barbato was taken to an area trauma center with life-threatening injuries. The child was taken to an area pediatric center as a precaution.
The preliminary cause of the crash appears to be Barbato's failure to remain in a single lane. Speed appears to have contributed to this crash, police said. The case will be reviewed by the state's attorney.
