Old Tyme Baseball (Tournament)

The fields at Marley Middle School will be transported back in time to the Civil War era for a few hours on Sunday, Sept. 18. Games will take place at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. (two different games will be held during each time slot).

This is the tournament for the Maryland teams in the Mid-Atlantic League. This brand of baseball brings sportsmanship, athletics and history together.

Don't forget to bring something to sit on and something for shade, if possible. Come for one game or bring your lunch and make a day of it!

More information about the team and the league:

The Excelsior BBC of Arundel is an old-tyme baseball team. BBC stands for Base Ball Club. we don't play by modern rules. The Excelsior are part of a Civil War style baseball league. We will be hosting a championship for the MD teams in our league on Sunday.

Here are some key differences between today's game and what the Excelsior play:

*In "vintage" baseball, we don't use gear aside from a baseball, a bat, and bases. That's right- we don't use baseball gloves!

* Because we don't wear gloves, a fielder can catch the ball after it bounces 1 time. If we do so, the batter is still out.

*The purpose is to have the other team put the ball in play. We don't try to strike people out.

*The game is intended to be a gentlemen's sport - we applaud people who make a great play, even if they're NOT on our team.

*Our uniforms are as accurate as possible- That means we try to wear what the civil war soldiers may have worn when they played."
