GLEN BURNIE, MD — A Glen Burnie home sustained an estimated $200,000 in damage after a fire broke out Saturday shortly before 5 p.m. The sole resident also suffered burns to his hand and was taken to the burn center at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. A firefighter suffered a leg injury while battling the blaze and was taken to UM Baltimore Washington Medical Center.

According to the Anne Arundel County Fire Department, the fire had already consumed the first and second floors of the home at 919 Jay Court by the time firefighters arrived. They believe the fire broke out on the rear deck. The 911 dispatch center received multiple calls from neighbors and passers-by alerting them to the fire.

The 40 firefighters who responded to the calls knocked down the fire from the outside of the home before moving inside to extinguish the fire that had spread to several rooms along with fencing and a shed in the backyard. The siding on a neighbor's home melted due to the intensity of the heat. The resident of the home has since been displaced and the cause of the fire is being investigated by the Anne Arundel County Fire and Explosives Investigation Unit.
