Online Fundraiser To Help Glen Burnie Family After House Fire

Five adults and four children cannot live in their Glen Burnie home after a fire caused $90,000 in damage. A GoFundMe page has been set up.

GLEN BURNIE, MD — An online fundraiser has been set up to help a family who lost everything in a June 3 house fire at 1310 William St. in Glen Burnie. The afternoon fire occurred in a two-story multifamily dwelling resulting in an estimated $90,000 loss. Two dozen firefighters responded to the fire. Someone in the home detected smoke in a second-floor bedroom and called for help, and a neighbor also reported that the home was on fire.

The Anne Arundel Fire Department reported that the fire began in a window air conditioning unit and then spread to the bedroom. Six adults and four children have been displaced because of the fire and are being assisted by the Red Cross.

Lisa Ernest spoke with Patch and said she was sleeping upstairs with her 2-year-old granddaughter and 9-month-old grandson when the fire broke out. Her son was outside with his two children and Ernest's five-year-old granddaughter, Emily.

"Emily brought my son's daughter upstairs to use the bathroom and that's when Emily smelled something and woke me up. If it wasn't for her, the three of us would not be here. Emily is my hero. She saved me, her brother and sister," Ernest said.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help out the family.

"They are left with little to nothing, and not a home to come back to," wrote Judith McPeak, who started the fundraiser online. "I am asking not just our karate family, but everyone seeing this go fund me to open your hearts, arms, and minds to offer assistance during this tragic time. Anything will help."
