Iconic Department Store To Close 14 More Stores, Including 1 In MD

The additional closures come two years after the company said it planned to shutter 150 underperforming locations nationwide.

Macy's is closing additional stores in 2026, including one in Maryland, nearly two years after the iconic department store chain announced it would shutter 150 underperforming locations as part of its "Bold New Chapter" plan.

The retailer plans to close 14 stores nationwide, with shoppers in 12 states set to lose their local Macy's.

According to the retailer's website, the Macy's store located at Marley Station in Glen Burnie is among them.

"Closing a store is never an easy decision, and it’s not one we take lightly," the company states on its website. "This change allows us to continue improving the Macy’s experience and serve customers in the ways they shop today — both online and at nearby locations."

The Glen Burnie store will join the Windsor Mill and Bel Air locations, both of which shuttered last year.

It's unclear when the Glen Burnie store will close.

In February 2024, Macy’s announced it would shutter 150 “underproductive locations” by the end of 2026, according to a Fast Company report.

The closures are part of the company's "Bold New Chapter" strategy, which is designed to return the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth, according to a news release. The plan also included investing in 350 go-forward Macy’s locations through the end of the year.

In January 2025, the company moved forward with closing 66 stores. Last month, Macy’s CFO Tom Edwards confirmed the chain still plans to shutter 65 locations to complete the initial 150 store closures; however, he extended the timeline, Fast Company reported.

"With our strong balance sheet and cashflow generation, we can be flexible on timing of transactions," Edwards said. “In order to maximize value of remaining assets, we now expect closures through 2028."

A Macy’s spokesperson told Fast Company that the company has closed 85 locations to date.
