The first shooting occurred shortly after midnight in the 200 block of Polk Drive and Heritage Hill Drive. Anne Arundel County police officers responded to the incident and found a man who had been shot. He was taken to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Officers discovered that an unknown suspect had fired several shots, hitting the man and two nearby homes that had people in them. The man was hit in the upper part of his body. The bullets that hit the homes did not injury the families.

While investigating the first shooting, officers heard multiple shots fired nearby. While searching the area, officers found a home with damage to the rear sliding door while an emergency call was dispatched for the 6400 block of Freedom Drive for a shooting. Residential security surveillance was reviewed and a suspect description was developed from the film. Officers then received a call about damage to a vehicle nearby.
