Residents Call Fire Department, Save Neighbor's Apartment

An unattended candle likely was the cause behind the unattended fire in on Secret Bend in Glen Burnie on Sunday.

Responsive neighbors and a smoke detector likely saved a Glen Burnie apartment complex from serious fire damage on Sunday, county fire officials said.

Neighbors heard a smoke detector alarm sounding from apartment F on Secret Bend in Glen Burnie around 4:53 p.m. Sunday and called 911, according to county fire department spokesman Steve Thompson.

Firefighters responded and found a fire in the kitchen of the unoccupied apartment. An unattended candle likely started the blaze, Thompson said.

Firefighters were able to get the fire under control by about 5:20 p.m. There were no injuries.

"If it wasn't for that smoke detector sounding, the fire would have probably been a lot worse by the time we got there," Thompson said.
