Tips to Stay Safe as Snow Storm Approaches Anne Arundel Co.

Charge up your phones, top off the gas tank and be try to delay driving as a winter storm heads toward Anne Arundel County.

Anne Arundel County officials are urging residents to prepare now for the winter storm that could bring 4 inches of snow to the region.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Anne Arundel County from 6 p.m. Monday to 6 p.m. Tuesday. The latest predictions are projecting that the Baltimore/Washington area could receive more than four inches of snow.

Snowfall is expected to begin falling early Monday and may continue into Tuesday.

Reminder: Students in Anne Arundel County Public Schools have Monday and Tuesday off for semester break.

The State Highway Administration on Sunday was pre-treating roads where snow is expected and loading trucks with salt and sand. The Monday morning commute could be hazardous, so state authorities urge drivers to delay travel if at all possible.

Prepare by taking the following precautions.

Build an emergency kit – Keep enough emergency supplies on hand for you and those in your care. Remember supplies for children, those with special needs and pets.

Keep the following items readily available:

  • Flashlights – not candles
  • Fresh batteries
  • Battery-operated clock radio
  • Corded telephone
  • Fully charged cell phone
  • Non-perishable foods
  • Water – one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days for drinking and sanitation
  • First aid kit
  • Local maps
  • Blankets

Residents should also consider gassing up their vehicles. And residents who rely on well water should fill a bathtub with water in advance of severe weather.

During and/or After the Storm:

• Have a supply of non-perishable food/water for use in emergencies and keep an adequate supply of medications and baby supplies on hand, if needed.

• Plan precautions to prevent water pipes from freezing during periods of intense cold, such as proper insulation of pipes or draining water from exposed pipes. As a last resort, maintain minimum water flow to prevent freezing.

• Wear proper clothing for weather conditions. Several layers of loose fitting, warm clothing is better than one thick garment. Wear hats and mittens or gloves when exposed to the cold.

• Pace physical activity such as snow shoveling or pushing cars. Regardless of age or physical condition, to avoid over-exertion. Elderly persons should be cautious in attempting snow removal.

• Check on elderly family and neighbors.

• Be aware of and stay clear of any downed power lines.

• Never run gas operated equipment such has generators inside a structure. Even a garage with the door open may not be adequately ventilated.

• Help the County Fire Department by clearing an area around any fire hydrants located on or adjacent to your property.
