Weekend Traffic Alert: Two Southbound MD 2 Lanes Closed

Plan ahead for traffic snags near the intersection of Solomons Island Road and Central Avenue.

Plan ahead for weekend traffic delays in the Edgewater area.

Beginning Friday at 9 a.m., the Maryland State Highway Administration will close two lanes on southbound MD 2 (Solomons Island Road) approaching the intersection to MD 214 (Central Avenue) in Edgewater.

Crews will remove the asphalt surface from southbound Solomons Island Road and replace it with a high-strength concrete known as “whitetopping.”

The new overlay will prevent ruts on the surface caused by heavy traffic, such as commercial trucks, stopping and starting at the intersection. On average, 42,000 vehicles travel through the intersection using Solomons Island Road and 25,000 pass through from Central Avenue.

Construction will take place on weekends, and the SHA expects work to be completed by mid-October. Every weekend beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday, two lanes on Solomons Island Road will be closed. The lanes will reopen no later than 5 a.m. Monday morning.

The intersection will remain accessible, but plan ahead for traffic. Alternate routes include taking Pike Ridge Road and Mayo Road.
