We've assembled a weekly calendar of kid-friendly activities and new places to try out with children. Each week, we'll give you the info on the five best family activities or events for the week. You're time-pressed enough, so we're happy to do the research and find the best things to do and places to go, both locally and within reasonable striking distance.

NASA Day

Where/When:  NASA Goddard, Greenbelt, Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Why Go: Star Wars characters, LEGO building and all things outer space will keep kids busy all day.

Planetarium Sky Calendars

Where/When: Howard B. Owens Science Center, Lanham, Friday, 7:30 p.m. t0 9 p.m.
Why Go: Learn why the world won't end in 2012.
Price: $4 adults; $2 students/seniors

Bird Walk
Where/When: Northway and Ridge Road, Greenbelt, Friday, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Why Go: Enjoy a morning nature walk with the kids in tow.
Price: Free

African-American Lecture
Where/When: Greenbelt Library, Greenbelt, Tuesday, 7 p.m.
Why Go: Learn about ancient African empires
Price: Free

Arts Drop-in
Where/When: College Park Community Center, College Park, Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon
Why Go: Fun art projects for ages 3-8
Price: Free
