Greenbelt Day Weekend 2011

Festivities commemorate the city's 74th Anniversary.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the city of Greenbelt celebrated its 74th anniversary with a collage of events and activities for adults and young people to enjoy.

“Every department wants to contribute to the celebration” said Greenbelt Department of Recreation Supervisor, Greg Varda.

Most activities were hosted in and around the Greenbelt Community Center. Some exhibits were educational, such as the child safety seat inspections and the symposium on the history and future of the city. Other events were more active and hands on, including art exhibitions and swimming in the outdoor pool.

A pivotal activity was the annual Youth Sprint Triathlon on Saturday, June 4. Youth between 8- and 15-years old participated in a three-part race, including a 50-meter swim in the Greenbelt Aquatic and Fitness Center, a 1.5-mile off-road bike course, and a .7-mile run, ending at Buddy Attick Park.

“I like it [Greenbelt Day Weekend] because it’s fun and interesting at the same time,” said triathlon first place winner, 12-year-old Eric Freeman.

The city also celebrated its 60th anniversary of Greenbelt baseball with an All-Star Game on Sunday, June 5, at McDonald Field.

Adding to the historical events was a naturalization ceremony that took place on Sunday, June 5. Over 30 people from various countries became naturalized U.S. citizens, adding to the diversity and history of the city of Greenbelt.

“Greenbelt is the best place,” said Greenbelt Mayor, Judith "J" Davis, “It's just number one. We need to celebrate everything.”
