Greenbelt Day Weekend Has an Artful Afternoon

Greenbelt celebrates its history through art, on June 3 through 5, at Greenbelt Day Weekend.

The City of Greenbelt celebrated the 74th anniversary of its incorporation during the first weekend in June. In addition to activities and events, the city hosted several art and music exhibits to share its colorful history.

Some activities took place throughout the weekend, such as the “Quilt: Art to Mend the World” exhibit in the Greenbelt Community Center. Artist Kate Ransohoff showcased her handmade quilts, each one telling a story about life and inequality.

“It’s not just about self-expression,” said quilt interpreter and friend of the artist, Karen Rowe. “It’s about raising awareness to injustice in the world and trying to get people to do things about it.”

Kids and adults could make their own quilts during the “Artful Afternoon” portion of Greenbelt Day Weekend festivities on Sunday, June 5.

In addition to hands-on quilt making, the Greenbelt Museum hosted Hands-on History Day, a tour through the museum emphasizing the city’s history in the 1930s and '40s.

Art and history weren’t the only hit. A live concert at the Roosevelt Center on Saturday, June 4, featured the Not2Cool Jazz Trio, who serenaded passers-by and a small audience with smooth song selections.

Even local celebrities came to enjoy the artistic festivities. Deborah Fishbeck, Miss Greenbelt 2010-2011, joined in on the Artful Afternoon fun.

“Greenbelt is such a unique place. It’s great to learn about it.” Fishbeck said.
