Hit-and-Run Driver: 'I'm So Ashamed'
The Cheverly man was sentenced to two years in prison for leaving the accident that killed UMD student Corey Hubbard.

The Cheverly man who fatally struck a University of Maryland student a year ago told the victim’s parents and a judge that he is ashamed of his actions.
Liam Adepo, 30, was sentenced Friday to two years in prison for leaving the scene of the accident that resulted in the death of Westhampton Beach, NY, native Corey Hubbard, 22, a student at the University of Maryland.
According to the Prince George’s County Police Department, Hubbard was killed while trying to cross Baltimore Avenue at Knox Road in College Park about 2 a.m. on Jan. 17, 2014.

“I’m so ashamed and sickened for what I did and the pain that I caused your family,” Adepo said in court, reports The Washington Post. “No amount of apologies can change what has happened.”
Adepo told family about the accident and later turned himself into police, the newspaper reports, and pleaded guilty in the case.

Hubbard’s death was one of three pedestrian deaths last year on Route 1 in College Park, Patch previously reported. To prevent further deaths, the road’s speed limit was dropped from 30 to 25 mph effective Aug. 1.
A slower speed limit, increased use of speed cameras, barriers in the median to prevent pedestrians from crossing in the middle of the block are all suggestions being considered, or enacted, to prevent more pedestrian deaths on the road.
