MISHKAN TORAH PRESENTS PROGRAM ON PERSONAL SECURITY

On January 19, 2014, the Mishkan Torah Adult Education Committee will be sponsoring a program on “Personal Security” at 10:30 am. The presentation will be held at Mishkan Torah Synagogue, 10 Ridge Road, Greenbelt, Maryland 20770. The topic is a timely one of concern to the entire Greenbelt Community. 

The speaker will be George Mathews of the Greenbelt Police Department. He will address issues such as home security, safety when traveling, and what to do in the case of an active shooter. Light refreshments will be.available for purchase starting at 9:45 am.

Mr. Mathews is the Public Information Specialist and the Community Liaison for the Greenbelt Police Department. He was a police officer for 25 years, the last 23 with the Greenbelt Police Department, where he was a Patrol Officer, Crime Prevention and Community Relations Officer, Press Information Officer and a DARE Officer. After retiring from the Department, George worked as a Crime Prevention Specialist with the Maryland Community Crime Prevention Institute (MCCPI) from 2009 to 2013. 

Mr. Matthews was recognized as Officer of the Year with the Hyattsville City Police Department in 1985; Prince George’s County Community Services Officer of the Year in 2004; and was awarded the Sam Walker Lifetime Achievement Award as the Maryland State DARE Officer of the Year in 2007. George is married and has two daughters, Hanna 13 and Taylor 14.  The entire community is invited to attend this timely and informative program. It is open to all, and there will be no charge.
