MLK Day of Service in Greenbelt

Thanks to MLK Day of Service Volunteers!

On January 19, the City of Greenbelt Public Works in partnership with CHEARS celebrated MLK Day of Service by hosting a Tree Protection Workday in Buddy Attick Park. A total of 33 volunteers protected slow-growth trees from beaver herbivory by placing protective wire caging around the base of trees. Volunteers also manually removed English ivy to restore the woods at Buddy Attick Park.

A total of about 70 trees were caged and over 100 trees were cleared of English ivy (where volunteers could reach). Mayor Emmett Jordan of Greenbelt made an appearance to personally thank the volunteers who showed up to the event.

We could not have done it without Brian Townsend, City of Greenbelt Horticulturalist, for demonstrating the proper techniques and supplying us with materials.
