Police Plan Sobriety Checkpoint in Laurel

The Laurel Police Department is warning drivers it will hold a sobriety checkpoint on Friday, Aug. 29, to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving.

Any impaired or drunk drivers will be ticketed on the spot, police say.

The checkpoint will take place from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Aug. 29 in the 100 block of Second Street.

Drunk driving causes nearly a third of all traffic deaths in Maryland, the department says.

According to the latest figures available from Mothers Against Drunk Driving, 160 Maryland residents were killed by drunk drivers in 2012.
