Suspected Carjacker May Be Mentally Ill: Police

A man charged with carjacking and crashing into a Hyattsville McDonald's may be mentally ill, say Prince George's County Police.

A suspected carjacker who allegedly crashed into a McDonald’s in Hyattsville on Tuesday may suffer from mental illness, say authorities.

Prince George’s County Police say the suspect allegedly approached a man sitting in his SUV at the intersection of Annapolis Road and 71st Avenue early Tuesday, asking for a ride, WJLA reports. After refusing to give Dominique Tyrone Harrison, 21, who has no fixed address, a ride, Harrison implied he had a weapon, police say. The owner of the SUV got out of the car and ran.

During his getaway, Harrison allegedly hit two vehicles. The driver of one of those vehicles followed Harrison and saw the suspect crash into the drive-thru at the McDonald’s on the 6200 block of Annapolis Road.

“I didn’t know what happened,” McDonald’s employee Louis Ntah told WJLA. He had been prepping food when he heard the crash from the drive-thru.

None of the employees inside the restaurant were hurt, although the building suffered extensive damage, according to police. The occupants of the struck vehicles Harrison reportedly struck were also not injured.

Police officers arrested Harrison on the scene. He suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Harrison faces charges related to the armed carjacking and the subsequent crashes. He has admitted his involvement in this incident, police say. Detectives believe Harrison may suffer from mental illness. He remains in the custody of the Department of Corrections.
