Tim Judson of the Nuclear Information & Resource Service speaks at Mishkan Torah

Tim Judson, the new executive director of the Nuclear Information & Resource Service (NIRS), will present a talk entitled “From Kyoto to Fukushima: Nuclear Power and Climate Action” on Sunday, March 23, from 10:30 am to 11:30 Add a categoryam at Mishkan Torah in Greenbelt, Maryland. 

The presentation will include a basic overview of nuclear power and a discussion of the problems NIRS believes are associated with relying on it as an energy source.

NIRS was founded 35 years ago to serve as a nationwide information and networking center for people concerned about nuclear power, radioactive waste, radiation, and sustainability.  Judson has been an organizer, researcher, and policy analyst on nuclear issues since 1998. Prior to joining NIRS in 2013, he was involved in nuclear power and energy issues in New York and New England with Citizens Awareness Network. He co-founded the Alliance for a Green Economy (AGREE), a statewide coalition in New York advancing a sustainable energy future. He has worked with nuclear whistleblowers and helped build the successful campaign to close the Vermont Yankee reactor. Judson also has a background in the labor movement: He has served as a member and organizer for the American Federation of Teachers; a researcher at Cornell University’s Institute for Labor Relations; a policy analyst for New York Hotel Trades Council, AFL-CIO; and a senior policy specialist for Workers’ Rights at the Progressive States Network.

Earlier this year, Mishkan Torah’s Social Action Committee co-hosted a program that presented what some see as the potential benefits of nuclear power in the face of climate change. Believing that it is important for the community to hear both sides of this complex issue, members of the committee invited Judson to present a talk about the potential drawbacks of this technology.
