Tim Judson, the new executive director of the Nuclear Information & ResourceΒ Service (NIRS), will present a talk entitled βFrom Kyoto to Fukushima: NuclearΒ Power and Climate Actionβ on Sunday, March 23, from 10:30 am to 11:30Β Add a categoryam atΒ Mishkan Torah in Greenbelt, Maryland.Β
The presentation will include a basic overview of nuclear power and a discussion ofΒ the problems NIRS believes are associated with relying on it as an energy source.
NIRS was founded 35 years ago to serve as a nationwide information andΒ networking center for people concerned about nuclear power, radioactive waste,Β radiation, and sustainability. Β Judson has been an organizer, researcher, and policy analyst on nuclear issues since 1998. Prior to joining NIRS in 2013, he was involved in nuclear power andΒ energy issues in New York and New England with Citizens Awareness Network. He co-founded the Alliance for a Green Economy (AGREE), a statewide coalitionΒ in New York advancing a sustainable energy future. He has worked with nuclearΒ whistleblowers and helped build the successful campaign to close the VermontΒ Yankee reactor. Judson also has a background in the labor movement: He has servedΒ as a member and organizer for the American Federation of Teachers; a researcherΒ at Cornell Universityβs Institute for Labor Relations; a policy analyst for NewΒ York Hotel Trades Council, AFL-CIO; and a senior policy specialist for WorkersβΒ Rights at the Progressive States Network.
Earlier this year, Mishkan Torahβs Social Action Committee co-hosted a programΒ that presented what some see as the potential benefits of nuclear power in the faceΒ of climate change. Believing that it is important for the community to hear bothΒ sides of this complex issue, members of the committee invited Judson to present aΒ talk about the potential drawbacks of this technology.
Mishkan Torah is located at 10 Ridge Road in Greenbelt, Maryland. Coffee andΒ pastries can be purchased beginning at 10:00 am on March 23. The presentationΒ begins at 10:30 am and is free to the public. Β To learn more about NIRS, visit www.nirs.org. If you have questions about thisΒ event, email socialaction@mishkantorah.org.Β
