'These checkpoints aren't designed to ticket people and make arrests; they are designed to spread public awareness.' —Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler

Five people were arrested during a DUI checkpoint in Bel Air this month, the Harford County Sheriff’s Office recently reported.

The checkpoint was set up on MD 924 near Ring Factory Elementary School overnight from Saturday, Aug. 15, to Sunday, Aug. 16, the report said.

Of the 380 people passing through the checkpoint, five were charged with driving under the influence, according to the report:

“These checkpoints aren’t designed to ticket people and make arrests; they are designed to spread public awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving and to make the roads in Harford County a safer place for everyone,” Gahler said in a statement. “We want to make sure everyone gets home safe to see their family each and every night.”

Officers from the Bel Air Police Department, Maryland State Police and Harford County Sheriff’s Office staffed the checkpoint.
