5 Charged at DUI Checkpoint Near Joppa: Police
Maryland State Police targeted impaired drivers overnight in memory of young man killed by drugged motorist, according to report.

Ahead of the Labor Day weekend, state troopers and Harford County deputies set up a sobriety checkpoint on Interstate 95 near Joppa that resulted in five people being charged, according to a statement from Maryland State Police.
The checkpoint was located on the ramp from Interstate 95 north to MD 152/Mountain Road and staffed by officers from the Bel Air Barrack, JFK Barrack and Harford County Sheriff’s Office, the statement said.
Police said that 486 vehicles passed through the checkoint From 11 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3, to 1:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 4.
Authorities announced these results:
- Three charged with possession of marijuana less than 10 grams
- One arrested for DUI
- One charged with marijuana possession less than 10 grams and possession of narcotic prescription medication
According to state police, the initiative was to honor Joshua Hanna, a 21-year-old from Street who died in a crash on MD 22 when he was hit by a drugged driver in Churchville on Nov. 5, 2011.
Jordan Craig Stewart, 29, was sentenced in 2013 to five years for negligent manslaughter, court records show.
He told police he was a heroin addict and either blacked out or fell asleep while on the phone with his mother when he hit Hanna’s vehicle head-on near Aldino Road on MD 22, according to The Aegis, which reported police found heroin and syringes in the vehicle.
