5 Displaced in Port Deposit Blaze: Fire Marshal

The Susquehanna Hose Company was among seven fire companies responding to the house fire.

PORT DEPOSIT, MD - Four adults and a baby were displaced by a house fire in Port Deposit early Monday morning, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

Those living in the two-story home in the unit block of Race Street discovered the fire at 3:08 a.m., according to the fire marshal, who reported that there were smoke alarms in the residence.

When crews first arrived, they saw fire from the bottom to the top of the house on the exterior and flames on the first and second floors inside, according to the Water Witch Volunteer Fire Company.

The blaze was ruled accidental due to a malfunctioning flue outside the home, the fire marshal reported.

It took 35 firefighters approximately an hour and a half to control the blaze, according to the report, which said Water Witch, Perryville, Rising Sun, North East, Susquehanna Hose, Darlington and Perry Point responded.

As a result of the fire, there was $60,000 in structural damage, according to the fire marshal; approximately $20,000 worth of items inside the home were also lost.

Officials said that the Red Cross was assisting the five people displaced by the fire.
