Acting for Adults Workshop Gets Underway

The Lewis Lane Players are beginning their second annual "Acting for Adults" workshop, strictly for the 18 and up crowd.

Why should the kids have all the fun? The Havre de Grace Drama Guild started out almost 10 years ago as a theater program for children. But over the past decade it has expanded to include film and even its own adult community theater group, the Lewis Lane Players. Over the years the Lewis Lane Players have put on classic plays such as Steel Magnolias, Blithe Spirit, Doubt and Lost in Yonkers. Perhaps you have been to one of their annual holiday performances of It's a Wonderful Life! A Live Radio Play.

But starting in 2016, the Lewis Lane Players added something new to their repertoire. They've invited aspiring adult actors to a 7 week workshop to learn a little bit about the craft of acting. All experience levels are welcome (including those with no experience). The only criteria is that this workshop is strictly for those who are 18 and up. The Guild has many other programs for the younger actors in our lives. But this class is intended to allow adults to have a fun, educational experience of their own.

On Wednesday, Jan. 11, the Lewis Lane Players kicked off their second annual workshop. The class will meet Wednesday evenings in room 4 of the Havre de Grace Activity Center, 351 Lewis Lane, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm for 7 weeks (through February 15). There is no performance. It is just a safe environment where actors can feel free to try new things without having to worry about an audience. In structure it is going to be very much a group dynamic, where the group as a whole will give feedback, brainstorm, etc.; i.e., helping each other grow. Topics that will be covered include how to break down a character, how to break down a scene and interacting with your environment.

Registration is just $20 plus an admin fee of $10 for Harford County residents, $15 for non-residents (so $30 or $35 total for both registration and admin for the class). The registration form is available at their registration page. All registration fees can also be paid on that website, or you may bring the form and a check for the fees to the first class.

If you would like additional information about this workshop, or about any of the Havre de Grace Drama Guild's other programs or performances, contact Ken Coughlan at hdgdrama@yahoo.com or (443)987-4395. The Guild has classes for ages from Kindergarten through adult in both theater and film, puts on seven performance weekends each year and has a number of summer camps and programs.
