CECILTON, Md: Just as farmers aspire to be good stewards of the land they work, the Upper Bay Ruritan Club strives to be good stewards of the next generation. For more than two decades, the Upper Bay Ruritan has provided scholarships to Bohemia Manor High School graduates seeking to realize their dreams of a better life through education.
The Upper Bay Ruritan Club, located in Cecilton, Md., awarded $1,000 scholarships to seven Cecil College students this fall.
"Since its founding, the Upper Bay Ruritan Club has been dedicated to strengthening our community through fellowship, goodwill, and service. Guided by our commitment to supporting residents and young people, our annual fundraisers are investments in our community's future. These scholarships represent more than financial assistance. They reflect our belief in the potential of our young people and our hope for the future," said Upper Bay Ruritan Club President Jeremy Rothwell.
The Upper Bay Ruritan scholarships have helped students earn degrees that will enrich their lives and help Cecil County thrive. These scholarship recipients are pursuing degrees in nursing, elementary education, social work, and agricultural studies.
"I am incredibly grateful for the financial support provided by the Upper Bay Ruritan Club and for the difference it makes in my ability to pursue my education and future goals. Although I may not have my entire future figured out yet, I have learned that it is okay for plans to change. My goal is to continue working hard, growing as a person, and building a life that makes me happy and proud," said Addi Sample, who will graduate in December with an associate degree in General Studies. "Thank you again for believing in students like me and supporting us as we navigate our futures."
The other recipients of these scholarships include Bailey Duff, Early Childhood Education; Sophie Azoulay, General Studies; Bryce McCoy, Computer Science; Areli Cano Lopez, General Studies; Violet Harris, General Studies; Danielle Richardson, General Studies.
"To tell you a little about my journey, I recently completed the nursing program prerequisites at Cecil College and earned my CNA certification with the support of this scholarship. I have some job interviews lined up and plan to begin the nursing program next year. I am grateful for the support you have provided, as it has helped me to pursue my career goals," said Cano Lopez.
Ruritan Clubs are service organizations located in small towns and rural areas. Each club surveys the needs of its community and then works to meet some of those needs. The organization aims to achieve "Fellowship, Goodwill, and Community Service."
"The Upper Bay Ruritans have been such generous donors to the college for quite some time. You are making a tremendous impact in the lives of our students," said Cecil College President Dr. Mary Way Bolt.
Organizations like the Upper Bay Ruritan Club have enabled the Cecil College Foundation to provide nearly $500,000 in student scholarships. The Upper Bay Ruritan Club has provided more than $100,000 in scholarships over the past two decades through fundraising events such as the Ruritan's annual Fall Spaghetti Dinner.
