Harford County Turning Green To Honor Veterans Through Nov. 11

Residents and businesses are encouraged to display green outdoor lights as part of a nationwide campaign recognizing military veterans.

HARFORD COUNTY, MD — Homes, businesses and government buildings across Harford County will be illuminated in green through Veterans Day as part of a nationwide effort to recognize military veterans and show appreciation for their service.

Harford County is participating in Operation Green Light from Nov. 4-11, joining Aberdeen Proving Ground, Harford Community College, the Harford County Chamber of Commerce and other local organizations in the annual observance.

Residents and businesses are encouraged to replace at least one outdoor light with a green bulb to participate.

"Harford County is proud to honor those who have served in our nation's military by participating in Operation Green Light," Harford County Executive Bob Cassilly said. "I encourage residents, businesses and organizations in our community to join us and light up Harford County green to let veterans know they are seen, heard and supported."

The national initiative, organized by the National Association of Counties and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers, is designed to raise awareness about the challenges veterans face and the services available to help them and their families.

Operation Green Light began in New York in 2021 through a partnership involving the New York State Association of Counties and veterans service organizations. The campaign expanded nationally in 2022 and has since attracted participation from hundreds of counties and local governments.

Green was selected because it symbolizes hope, renewal and well-being. The phrase "green light" also represents moving forward, reflecting the transition many veterans make from military service to civilian life, organizers say.

Harford Community College is among the local organizations taking part this year. The college plans to illuminate its library in green throughout the observance.

Beyond recognizing veterans' service, the initiative highlights the importance of connecting former military members with healthcare, employment, housing assistance, education and other benefits.

In Harford County, the Harford County Veterans Commission helps veterans and their families find available programs and resources.

The commission provides information about veterans benefits, healthcare, housing and financial assistance, employment opportunities, mental health services and community organizations.

According to the commission's annual report, it handled approximately 225 requests for assistance during its most recent reporting period, a 12% increase over the previous year. The requests included help with benefits claims, healthcare, housing and employment.
