Applications Accepted For 3 Seats On Harford County School Board

Applications are being accepted to fill 3 open seats on the Harford County Board of Education. Here's what to do if you're interested.

HARFORD COUNTY, MD — Applications are open now through May 9 for three seats on the Harford County school board, which are appointed by the county executive. The choices must be approved by the County Council.

Applicants must live in Harford County and have been registered to vote in the county for the past three years.

An application form is posted on the county website.

The terms last four years and will start July 1. The board includes three members appointed by Harford County Executive Bob Cassilly, six elected members and one student member.

In 2022, voters chose Denise Perry, Carol L. Mueller, Melissa Hahn, Diane M. Alvarez, Wade Sewell and Carol Bruce to serve as the elected candidates on the board.

The school board sets policy and approves the budget and curriculum for about 38,000 students, among other duties established by state law. Harford County board members are not paid a salary, but they do receive a small stipend for expenses, the county executive shared.

Regular meetings of the Harford County Board of Education are normally held on the second and fourth Monday of each month (except July and August) at 6 p.m. Special meetings also may be held throughout the year.
