The choices must be approved by the County Council. Applicants must live in Harford County and have been registered to vote in the county for the past three years. An application form is posted on the <a href="https://www.harfordcountymd.gov/FormCenter/County-Executive-13/Board-of-Education-Application-408" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">county website</a>. The terms last four years and will start July 1. The board includes three members appointed by Harford County Executive Bob Cassilly, six elected members and one student member. In 2022, <a href="https://patch.com/maryland/belair/harford-county-election-results-2022-race-school-board" target="_blank" rel="noopener">voters chose</a> Denise Perry, Carol L. Mueller, Melissa Hahn, Diane M. Alvarez, Wade Sewell and Carol Bruce to serve as the elected candidates on the board. The school board sets policy and approves the budget and curriculum for about 38,000 students, among other duties established by state law. Harford County board members are not paid a salary, but they do receive a small stipend for expenses, the county executive shared.
