Susquehanna State Park Closing Boat Ramp for Maintenance

The Lapidum boat launch will be out of commission Tuesday.

Starting Oct. 9, the Lapidum boat launch at Susquehanna State Park will be closed for maintenance. The projected reopening is Dec. 1, according to a statement from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

Silt and debris have accumulated at the boat ramp since Tropical Storm Lee, according to a sign posted on a piling there. During the storm in Sept. 2011, Conowingo Dam rose to its third highest recorded level in history.

As a result of the silt, waters have become more shallow. A sign near the ramp cautions: "Shallow water conditions. Launch at own risk."

Dredging will begin at the ramp after a sediment barrier is installed, according to park staff.

"This work is necessary in order to keep the facility in a safe and operable condition,” said Park Manager Nicole Merrick in a press release. “Every effort will be made to reopen the facility for public access as soon as possible."
